We all face moments when life feels massive — too much to handle, too fast to stop.
Maybe it’s a sudden loss, a financial mess, a diagnosis, or just the slow grind of stress that wears you down. The kind of problem that makes you say, “This one’s too big for me.”
And maybe you’re right — maybe it is too big for you.
But it’s not too big for God.
That’s the message behind Psalm 93:4: no wave, no storm, no chaos is stronger than the One who made the sea itself.
The problems that tower over us are still under Him.

“The LORD on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea.“
The Waves Can Roar, but God Rules the Tide
The sea is used as a metaphor for everything wild, huge, and uncontrollable — the noise, the power, the uncertainty of life. But right after describing the roar of the waves, the verse shifts focus:
“The Lord on high is mighty.”
It’s not that the waves stop existing; it’s that their power is limited.
They can rise, crash, and thunder — but they can’t overrule the One who commands them.
And that’s exactly how God’s strength works in our lives.
He doesn’t always silence the storm immediately, but He gives us something greater: the assurance that nothing can rise higher than His authority.
God Is Greater
A friend once told me about a time her small business nearly collapsed. Orders dried up, her savings ran out, and she was just weeks away from closing. She said every day felt like standing in front of a tidal wave.
One night, exhausted, she prayed — not for a miracle, but just for peace. The next morning, she woke up with a quiet sense that God hadn’t left her. She decided to take one small step: call a client she hadn’t heard from in months. That call led to a new project… which opened the door to others. Within six months, her business had recovered.
When she told me this, she said, “The wave didn’t shrink — God just grew larger in my eyes.”
That’s the shift this verse invites us to make: instead of measuring the size of our storm, we look at the magnitude of our God.
How to Stand Firm When the Waves Rise
Here are a few gentle reminders to hold onto when life feels unsteady:
- Anchor yourself in prayer. Even a short, honest prayer — “God, help me stay grounded” — can quiet the rush inside your heart.
- Name your waves. Identify what’s really tossing you around — fear, doubt, pressure — and bring each one to God.
- Take one small action. When everything feels too big, doing one thing (sending that email, taking that walk, saying that prayer) reminds you that the storm isn’t in charge.
- Remember the pattern. Waves rise, and then they fall. No storm lasts forever.
- Stop magnifying the problem. The more we focus on it, the bigger it seems. Shift your gaze to God — His power has no ceiling.
- Pray honestly, not perfectly. “God, I can’t handle this, but I know You can” is enough.
- Remember past rescues. If He’s carried you before, He’ll carry you again.
- Do the next right thing. You don’t have to solve everything at once. Take one faithful step.
The truth is, your situation may look powerful — but it’s not almighty.
Only God is.
And maybe — just maybe — the next time the waves roll in, you’ll look up instead of down, knowing Who steadies you.
Journaling Prompts: Seeing God as Greater
Use these questions to help you reflect and reconnect with your blessings:
- What situation in my life currently feels “too big” for me?
- How can I remind myself that God’s power is greater than this problem?
- When have I seen God turn something impossible into something beautiful?
- What’s one practical step I can take today to act from faith instead of fear?
- How have I seen God’s strength show up for me in the past?
- What helps me feel anchored when I start to drift into worry or fear?
- What small step can I take today to remind myself that I’m safe in God’s hands?
The storms don’t define you — they reveal what’s already strong within you.
And the One who made the sea is not threatened by its waves.
So breathe deep.
Let the tide roar if it must.
You’re held by a power mightier than the waves — a love that never lets go.
